A century ago, Freud formulated his revolutionary theory that dreams were the disguised shadows of our unconscious desires and fears; by the late 1970s, neurologists had switched to thinking of them as just “mental noise” — the random byproducts of the neural-repair work that goes on during sleep.

[划结构]

句子是由分号连接的并列句：

第一个分句A century ago, Freud formulated his revolutionary theory that dreams were the disguised shadows of our unconscious desires and fears中，that引导同位语从句说明theory的具体内容；

第二个分句by the late 1970s, neurologists had switched to thinking of them as just “mental noise”—the random byproducts of the neural-repair work that goes on during sleep中，them指代dreams；

破折号后面的内容是mental noise的同位语，其中that引导定语从句修饰work。

[学语法]

定语从句和同位语从句的区分：

1、定语从句，是形容词的功能。

名词+关系代词，关系代词(that/ which/ who)在后面的从句中作主语或者宾语，也就是说，从句中缺成分，一般缺主语或宾语。

关系代词在从句中作宾语时，关系代词可以省略。

2、同位语从句：是名词性从句的一种，本质上是名词的功能。

抽象名词+that，同位语从句是对其前面抽象名词的内容进行说明，引导词多用that，从句中不缺成分，也就是说，that在从句中不作任何成分，没有任何意义，但不可以省略。
